- A lake is a body of water that is completely surrounded by land. Almost all lakes are freshwater. The most well-known lakes in North America are called the Great Lakes. Their names are Lake Erie, Lake Michigan, Lake Ontario, Lake Huron and Lake Superior.
You probably know the water in most lakes are blue. But do you know that lakes can be many other colors? It's hard to believe, but there are many pink lakes in Australia. They turn pink for part of the year due to algae that lives there.
